The Greater Cleveland Conference has a new program to recognize outstanding monthly performances by our GCC Athletes. Athletic Directors from the Greater Cleveland Conference will nominate student athletes from their school based on their monthly performances and accomplishments.
GCC January Athletes Of The Month
Lili has been a consistent leader this season. She stepped up her skill level on Vault and Bars and it has pushed her to the top of the podium. She has shined on all four events and her work ethic, passion, and Blue Devil pride is a fantastic example for her younger teammates. She won floor at the first GCC competition, placed in the Top 3 in the All Around at several meets, and hit or tied personal record scores on all four events. We are so proud and excited for her. Vinny : Throughout the season Vinny has battled through injuries to compile a overall record of 22 wins and 6 losses. Vinny has achieved placement at every tournament this year along with winning the 120 lbs. Championship at the North Coast Classic. This month, Vinny placed 3rd at the prestigious Bill Dies Memorial at Akron Firestone High School. Off the mat, Vinny has been a true leader for the entire team by setting a daily example of what is to be expected.
Nadia has played three years on varsity and was named a captain this season. She is one of the top scorers this season and had her best game on Senior Night against Lincoln West, scoring 13 points. In the classroom, Nadia finished the second quarter with a 3.5 GPA. Xavier : leads the team averaging 15 points and 5 rebounds a game. Xavier is extremely dedicated to basketball and the team, and it shows when he steps on the court. His hard work in the off-season is paying off with and his talent is starting to get noticed. Coach Parker is extremely proud of Xavier!
Kendall won the All Around title at the Thornville Sheridan Meet after placing 2nd on the Vault and Uneven Parallel Bars, 3rd on the Balance Beam, and 5th on Floor Exercise. She was the champion on the Bars and placed 3rd in the All Around at the Kenston Meet. Kendall also led the team in All Around placing at the Rubber City Rumble with a 3rd place finish. She also was 2nd in the All Around at the Senior Night Meet. Chase rolled the first 300 game of his career on January 25th. He earned All-Tournament Team honors at the G-Men Classic with a 720 series. He has bowled solid during the month of January with a 229 average. Chase has helped the team to an undefeated record overall and in the GCC.
In the month of January, Kylie played in 8 of the 9 games. In those 8 games the team went 5-3. Kylie averaged 10.5 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 1.6 APG, and 3.6 SPG. When Kylie was on the floor the team was at a +39.
Mackenzie is a 3 year starter on our league leading Basketball team. She is averaging 24 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists this season.
Gianna After finishing 7th in the state last year, Gianna Upchurch began this season with increased difficulty and leadership. She started off with a strong third place finish on bars in a quad meet against reigning state champions Brecksville, Padua, and Revere and then claimed the bar title with a 9.05 at the GCC conference invitational. Most recently, Gianna finished 2nd on bars at the eight team Akron Rubber City Invitational with a season high 9.25. Mackenzie Schulz should be chosen for Student Athlete of the Month because on senior day she scored her 1,000 points in her career as a Mustang. She is averaging 15 points this month and has had three double double games.
