GCC JANUARY ATHLETES OF THE MONTH

The Greater Cleveland Conference has a new program to recognize outstanding monthly performances by our GCC Athletes. Athletic Directors from the Greater Cleveland Conference will nominate student athletes from their school based on their monthly performances and accomplishments.

 

Alex was runner up at the GCC Championship. She also won in dual meets against Shaker/Euclid and Hawken/AOA. Noah was runner up in the 50 free at GCC Championship. He also won the 50 free in dual meets against Shaker/Euclid and Hawken/AOA.
Paige: 10.5 PPG, 2.3 Assists Per Game, Leads Team in Free Throw Percentage. Carter: 12.1 PPG, 5.8 Rebound Per Game, 3.9 Assists Per Game, 1.2 Steals Per Game. 22 Point against Medina
Delilah averaged over 14 points and over 7 rebounds per game, both were team leading averages. She also had big games against Holy Name and Horizon Science Academy, scoring 21 points in each game. Mikhail finished in 2nd place in the 132 lb weight class at the Eastlake North John Matteucci Memorial Varsity Invitational. He also recorded a win by tech fall over Shaker Heights.
Ella is 13-1 this season in dual meet competitions. Ella took 1st place at the GCC Meet scoring a 430.75 which also shattered the Medina High School 11-Dive Record by 47.35 points. Less than a week later, she broke the MHS 6-Dive Record that was established back in 1998 with a score of 235.25 points. In her last dual meet as a Medina student-athlete she broke her own 6-Dive Record again with a score of 253.65 points. Ella will be continuing her academics and athletics career next year at Cleveland State University. Brady won four events at the GCC Meet. He had victories in the 200 yard individual medley (2:01.69) and 100 backstroke (54.38), as well as helping the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays to victory.
Sierra has averaged 162 for the month, including a high game of 213. At the Tomahawk Invite, Sierra anchored the team helping the Cards qualify 2nd overall. Ben was undefeated in the month of January. Currently 29-3. Won the Pin City Tournament and The Josh Hephner Tournament in Austintown
Senior Cheerleader, Queen Aniya Evans-Antoine, has been a part of the cheerleading team since her freshman year and has excelled every year. Aniya has served as a team captain for two years, and shows up to every practice, game, fundraiser, and team event with a positive attitude and a big smile. She never settles for average, and her drive and leadership has pushed the entire program to new levels. Aniya has blessed our team with her talent in multiple competitions all while maintaining a 4.1 GPA. Aniya is truly an amazing student-athlete and we are honored to have her on our Cheer team representing Raider Nation and the Shaker Heights schools and community. Junior Diver, Laurence Sison, has been progressing well throughout the season. He has strung together consistent runner-up finishes throughout the GCC competitions including the GCC Championships. Laurence finished his regular season with a season high personal best performance 233.63 and 1st place finish vs Beachwood and Chardon. Laurence will next look to make an impact at the OHSAA Diving tournament.
Kennedi Neale has been averaging 23 points this season and had a season career high of 30 against Mentor, scored her 1,000 point against Jackson and has been the leading scorer all season with a team record of 15-1 so far this season. She has also contributed numerous rebounds and assists stats and led the Lady Mustangs to another conference championship! Shayler Smith is a junior on the Strongsville Gymnastics Team. Shayler has been a top 5 all around gymnast at every meet this season. On January 4th, Strongsville won the first GCC meet (against Brunswick, Medina, Mentor, and Shaker Heights). Shayler won the all around with a 34.7 and vault with a 8.9. She also placed second on beam and fourth on floor. On January 11th, Shayler placed 5th all around against some big competition including Magnificat (state runner-ups from last year) at the Rubber City Rumble. At our home meet, Shayler won all around (35.35), vault (9.1), and beam (9.0). She placed 5th on bars and 3rd on floor. At our most recent meet, the High School Gymnastics Challenge on January 24th, Strongsville went up against some of the top teams in the state including Brecksville (state champions), Magnificat (state runner-ups), Hudson, and Padua. Shayler placed 4th all around with a 35.65 and 8th on vault with a 9.2.
