Greater Cleveland Conference February Athletes Of The Month

The Greater Cleveland Conference has a new program to recognize outstanding monthly performances by our GCC Athletes. Athletic Directors from the Greater Cleveland Conference will nominate student athletes from their school based on their monthly performances and accomplishments.

 

GCC February Athletes Of The Month

Earlier this year, Derek got his 100th career win! Derek finished his senior year going 17-2. At the OHSAA State Tournament, Derek finished in 3rd place! Derek will continue his athletic career and wrestle at NC State University.
Makayla helped lead the Blue Devils to a 2nd straight appearance as they advanced to the District Bowling Tournament. At Sectionals, she bowled a 402 series and was the anchor on the team during baker games! On the season she had a 162 average, a 236 game-high, a 581 high 3-game series, and a 416 high 2-game series.
Andrew bowled 25 plus pins over his average from last year and bowled the second-highest game for the team against Clearview with a 233!
Taylor was a team captain this year and was the leading scorer for the season. She made First Team All-County and All-Conference. She will be attending The Ohio State University in the fall!
Jaden was a key contributor for the Panthers Basketball team the final month of the season and into the playoffs. During the month of February, Jaden averaged 15.0 points per game. Over the three OHSAA tournament games, Jaden averaged 22.0 points with games of 21, 27, and 18 during the Panthers run to the District Semi-Final.
Ya’jhaira played nearly every minute for the Panthers in the month of February. She was the second-leading scorer for the Lady Panthers averaging 10.3 points per game!
Quentin had a 36-2 record entering the District Tournament. He is ranked 5th in the state in the 138 pound weight class. He won a Sectional Title without giving up a point or going longer than the 1st period.
Colleen won her 2nd Greater Cleveland Conference All-Around title of the year at the GCC Championship Meet which crowned her the GCC Gymnast of the Year. She had the highest scores on the vault, uneven parallel bars, and balance beam to help the Bees finish as Co-Champions of the league. She also helped the team finish in 5th place at the OHSAA State meet! Also, at the State Tournament, Colleen qualified as an individual on vault (19th overall), balance beam (4th Overall), and the all-around (11th Overall)!
• Sectional Champ 200 IM, 2nd 100 Breaststroke, 2nd 400 Free Relay, 3rd 200 Free Relay • Districts 16th 200 IM, 8th 100 Breaststroke, 13th 400 Free Relay • Paced the team to a 9-3 overall record and sectional runner up title • Moved to 2nd fastest in school history in the 200 IM and 2nd fastest in school history in the 100 Breaststroke
• Sectional Champ 200 Free, 3rd 100 Back, 2nd 400 Free Relay, 3rd 200 Medley Relay • Districts 10th 200 Free, 13th 100 Back, 5th 200 Free Relay, 8th 400 Free Relay State Qualifier 200 Free Relay • Paced the team to a 10-2 overall record and sectional runner up title • Moved to 3rd fastest in school history in the 200 Free and 3rd fastest in school history in the 100 Back
Dominic has had a tremendous first year of high school diving competition. In addition to being the GCC and Sectional Champion, he also won the 2020-2021 Boys 1 mtr Diving at the OHSAA State meet. Congratulations Dominic on being a State Champion!
Chyanne’s aggressive play and take charge attitude helped lead the Comets to a strong finish. After dealing with injuries and quarantines throughout the season, Chyanne helped her team come back to win 6 out of their last 8 games!
Brooke led the Strongsville Mustangs to a 2nd place finish at Sectionals as a team and then qualified individually in three events and the all-around. At Districts, Brooke led the team to a sixth-place finish and a place in the state championships for the first time since 2015. At the State meet Brooke helped her team finish in 6th place! Also at the State Tournament, Brooke qualified as an individual on vault (12th overall), and balance beam (33rd overall).
